Vignette
To travel on Swiss motorways, road users must purchase and display a vignette (sticker) or face large on the spot fines. You can buy a vignette at most border crossings, petrol stations, post offices and even online. The vignette is valid for the calendar year in which it is purchased.
Winter Driving
In Switzerland, there is no legal obligation to fit your vehicle with winter tyres, however they are recommended as they help to prevent accidents in wintery conditions.

Tolls
The LSVA/ID card is needed to pay Swiss toll can be picked up at the border when entering Switzerland for the first time (with a registration document). You can then use the card to pay for a KM based tolling system at any LSVA terminal.
Winter Driving
Snow chains must be carried during winter months, and where there is any possibility of snow. Snow chain use is mandatory on certain sections of road when signposted "Chaines a Neige Obligatoires." No specified time period, as some of the mountain roads can have snowfall during the summer.
Driving Restrictions
There are driving restrictions applicable throughout Switzerland for vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of more than 3500kg ; industrial tractors and machines; articulated vehicles and road trains over 5000kg which are:
- Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 24:00
- Nightly from 22:00 to 05:00
