Winter Driving
When there is snow or ice on the road, there are a selection of items that you can put on your vehicle, to enable you to be able to drive, below we've listed them:
Winter Tyres
Winter tyres are the best way to ensure that your vehicle preforms well in wintery conditions, there is a common misconception that they only improve the vehicle handling in snowy or icy conditions - however most winter tyres perform better than standard summer tyres at temperatures under 10C.
Snow Chains
Snow Chains are great when you have the need to drive in snowy or icy conditions, but do not want the extra cost of having winter tyres fitted to your vehicle.
Tips
- Read the manual, and watch a YouTube tutorial if you've never fitted them before, they can be a little bit awkward to install especially when coupled with snowy / icy conditions.
- Check the tension regularly, improperly tensioned chains can shred your tyres.
- Drive slower than usual, spinning the wheels could damage your vehicle.
Snow Socks
Snow socks are textile liners that wrap over the wheel and tyre to give improved grip on ice and snow, they are much easier to install than snowchains and give more grip than a standard summer tyre. However in some countries they are not approved to be used on roads, where signs indicate that snow chains must be used.
Studded Tyres
If you drive more on icy roads than on snowy ones in winter, studded tyres are the choice for you - although these types of tyres are only required in the harshest of conditions. Many countries do not allow the use of studded tyres due to the damage they can cause to the underlying road surface.
